  2. GO Waukegan Community Walk - Hinkston Park

    The Waukegan Park District will be hosting several GO WAUKEGAN walks in 2022! The outdoor walks are free events intended to encourage the community to walk at least thirty minutes every day. Each walk will have a unique theme, including a Glow Walk, Zombie Walk, and Winter Wonder Walk. Registration is not required to participate in the walks. In case of inclement weather, walks will be postponed until a new date has been determined.

    Meet at: Three Brothers Theatre

    Join Waukegan Main Street (WMS) for their bimonthly community cleanups! They'll pick up litter to freshen up our Downtown! Cleanup starts at 9am and runs until 11am or when all of the litter is removed. Meet at 221 N Genesee Street (Three Brothers Theatre) and head South down to Belvidere Road. WMS will supply trash bags, gloves, and water for all.

    Bus tour of historic African American sites throughout Lake County. The tour last approximately two hours. Tour the African American Museum at The England Manor as one of the stops. Free, but advanced tickets are required. In cooperation with: African American Museum at The England Manor, Waukegan Park District, Waukegan Public Library, City of Waukegan, Waukegan Historical Society, Waukegan Township, and Waukegan Public Schools

  6. Pre-Civil War Quilts: The Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad

    Connie Martin’s presentation, which is based on her mother’s work, "Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom,” explains how families, including her ancestors, implemented codes within their quilts to aid slaves in winning their freedom. Martin will explain the meanings and interpretations within these quilts, which have been shared through generations.
