    CLC Film Professor Chris Cooling will hold a discussion on the history and significance of this important West African art movement. From the early 1980s to the late 90s pirate VHS/DVD video clubs flourished throughout West Africa, offering a crowd-pleasing mix of Hollywood, Bollywood, and Hong Kong spectacles alongside local low-budget productions. In Ghana, a lack of access to printing presses resulted in hand painted advertising posters that made the films look fantastic, mesmerizing, and other-worldly. The video clubs are no more, but the painted posters continue to be produced on a commission basis.
