From the Desk of Mayor Ann B.TaylorIt’s hard to believe that summer is winding down. Days are getting shorter and classrooms are full once again, but it’s still a great time to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine in Waukegan.
We have a packed schedule for arts and culture lovers on Saturday, August 20th, with ArtWauk, Ray Bradbury Dandelion Wine Fine Arts & Music Festival, a Ray Bradbury Literary Walk, and Afro Fest! Details below and on our Calendar of Events. No summer would be complete without fireworks, so I’m pleased to announce our 4th of July fireworks display has officially been rescheduled for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 3rd at 8pm at the Harbor. I hope you take time to attend these great end of summer events!d at 8pm at the Harbor. I hope you take time to attend these great end of summer events!
Lastly, with school back in session, please keep our students, teachers, and parents safe by being mindful while driving near schools and through neighborhoods. I’d also like to remind our residents that the Waukegan Police Department is always hiring. If you or someone you know would like to serve our community, I encourage you to join our hard-working police force!

Back To School SafetyIt is important for drivers to slow down and pay attention when kids are present, especially before and after school. Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas. When driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car. This will give you more time to stop once the yellow lights start flashing and the stop arm is extended. Please note that it is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
