Public Notice: Midwest Generation Closing Ash Ponds

Midwest Generation to Host Public Meetings on Closure Plans for Waukegan’s West and East Ash Ponds

Public Notice from Midwest Generation (MWG) was dropped off at City Hall yesterday at 4:15pm regarding the Closure Plans for the Waukegan's West and East Ash Ponds.

MWG will host two public meetings to share information and engage with the community about proposed plans to close the Waukegan Station’s West and East Ash Ponds.  It is anticipated the Waukegan Station will no longer generate power from coal as of June 2022, eliminating coal emissions and new ash.  Consistent with state and federal regulations,  MWG is proposing to close the West Ash Pond by removing the remaining ash and  repurposing the pond to treat non-coal ash wastewater, including stormwater and area runoff.  MWG is proposing to close the East Ash Pond by installing a final cover system over the remaining ash and conducting long-term monitoring.  MWG anticipates filing a construction  permit application with the State of Illinois in February 2022.

Following a presentation at the virtual meetings, residents will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session. Spanish translation will be available. Meetings will be Wednesday, December 15th, 6 to 8pm. and Thursday, December 16th, 10am to 12pm.

Participation in the virtual meeting will be available via Zoom with Meeting ID: 823 5415 2005. Participants may also dial in by phone during meeting times at 312-626-6799 and Meeting ID 823 5415 2005.
