Underground Railroad: Journeys of Freedom

Witness the journeys of former enslaved people who utilized the Underground Railroad for FREEDOM! In recognition of Juneteenth and the Underground Railroad, author and historian Jeremy Houston and Shabilla Adams will give a presentation of two former enslaved individuals who traveled the Underground Railroad to freedom. The program is titled, “Narrative of A Natchez Slave: A Man and Woman’s Quest to Freedom.” Houston will be dressed in period clothes as he reenacts William Thompson’s life. He will be joined by Shabilla Adams, a reenactor and tour operator in Natchez. Adams, owner of IAM Tours, will portray Lillie Ann Granderson during Houston’s reenactment. The African American Museum at England Manor is a historic home museum that focuses on the African American experience, in Downtown Waukegan. The museum features exhibits and artifacts that chronicle the various stages of the African American experience. Dinner and refreshments will be served before the presentation.
